Panasonic Lumix G5, FZ200, LX7 preview / interview

Author: admin  |  Category: Digital Cameras

digital cameras An interview with Sebastian Drawert, European Manager for Panasonic Lumix, about the new Lumix G5, FZ200 and LX7 cameras announced in July 2012. In the video, we discuss all three models, along with a possible successor to the GH series.

I filmed this video using an Olympus EM5 and 12-50mm lens at 12mm (24mm equivalent). I recorded backup audio using a Zoom H2n microphone, but ended up using the audio recorded by the EM5 as it was better-balanced for both of our voices.

For further information on all three models, please see my individual preview articles at Cameralabs, at the links below. These will also be where you’ll find my full reviews of each camera once they become available.

Seems to me that Gordon’s questions were far more documented than were the answers from the representative.

LX7 – a brilliant move by Panasonic to make a faster lens over an improved sensor. Love the f stops on the lens barrel as well.

Gordon. When can we expect to see you doing a review of the D800 and perhaps the D800E? Looking very much forward to that.

    Interesting: The G5 …
Interesting: The G5 in Sebastian’s hands at 2:42 looks like a toy, tiny bit of tech. I think that is the reason why I wouldn’t want to own a G5. Considering the size, I really don’t like to have fiddly dials and buttons to work with.

    Gordon inquires …
Gordon inquires contrast detection quick focus on objects coming towards cam (vs phase detection method [still shots]), yet Drawert responds “video continuous focus”. zoom lever on G5 is interesting. Gordon mentions Lumix GF5 & Lumix GX1 (micro 4/3 sensor size) as alternatives for a fixed lens cam when talking about LX7 (1.7 inch) 12:30-12:50 *implicitly Canon G1x (big sensor, fixed lens f/2.8- f/5.8) is LX7 competitive. bright Lumix lenses are impressive.

yeh true… i did get the LX5 but the sensor let me down. i’d recommend an interchangeable to anyone spending over like £400

    RX100’s (apparently …
RX100’s (apparently, as of this writing) going to list for ~$150(USD) more than the LX7, & although you do gain a more pocketable camera w/ a larger sensor w/ the RX100, you’re also going to have to deal w/ a narrower, slower lens (ending up stopped down to almost an f4.9 at 90mm vs. the LX7’s f2.3, macro focus distance not nearly as close, awa no hot shoe, no capability to add accessories to it, & no capability to charge the battery outside of the camera w/ the RX100. Serious downtime, maybe?

    I had the LX5 then …
I had the LX5 then i moved to the NEX 5N, I’ve got loads of old zuiko film lenses. im going to get the 50mm f1.8 sony. I’ve got the samyang 35mm f1.4.
The LX7’s sensor size is a serious downfall. If you going to spend that much on a camera that doesn’t change lenses you might as well get the Sony RX100. sensor is massive. 1″. also it covers the same zoom range and is much more compact. the Zeiss lens is good too and should be a much much much much better camera. it all comes down to price.

  18. cameralabs Says:

    When Sebastian …
When Sebastian describes the G5 as having a ‘digital’ sensor he means one which has the analogue to digital conversion built-into the sensor itself to reduce noise rather than having the conversion done externally. In the G-series, only the GH had this previously, so the G5 should have better quality than the G3 and GX1 despite them all being 16 MP. I’ll have to wait for final models to compare with EM5.

it’s not Olympus EM-5 sensor since EM-5 sensor is produced by Sony! Other Olympus sensors is built by Panasonic.
