Following the presentation of the Apple Watch Series 3 and Apple TV 4K, Apple’s Chief Marketing Officer Phil Schiller unveiled the company’s latest iPhones, in front of a full house in the company’s new Steve Jobs Theater, in Cupertino, CA. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are the direct successors to the current-gen lineup of the 7 and 7 Plus, but come with a host of enhancements.

The iPhone 8’s 12MP rear-facing camera has a larger, faster sensor, a new color filter, optical image stabilization, and deeper pixels, with an in-house image signal processor providing wider color capture, better HDR photos, and faster autofocus in low light. Those low-light photos are enhanced with a quad-LED flash with Slow Sync, for better lighting uniformity. On the 8 Plus, you’ll find two 12MP cameras, one f/1.8 and one f/2.8. Portrait Mode has been improved with Portrait Lighting, which improves lighting in real time with user-selectable adjustments. Slow-motion video capture has seen a bump, too, with 60 fps available at 4K resolutions and 240fps at 1080p.

Those cameras come into play with new augmented-reality capabilities. Schiller invited a developer to play an AR game live on stage and showed a few other apps, including the MLB At Bat app, which overlays individual stats on players as you watch the game through your iPhone.

The 8 and 8 Plus are powered by the new A11 Bionic chip, made up of two performance cores and four efficiency cores for 25% faster peak performance and 70% faster standard performance than its predecessor, the A10 Fusion. The new performance controller can utilize all six cores at once for increased power with a minimal hit to battery life and has an Apple-designed GPU, estimated to be 30% faster than the previous generation. It’s all water- and dust-resistant and clothed in aluminum around the edges. Glass backing enables Qi wireless charging for the first time on an iPhone, and stereo speakers provide a long-awaited sound enhancement. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will ship in silver, Space Gray, and gold.
