Bag to School: Six Bags for College and Beyond

The “meet cute” is a classic Hollywood storytelling device used to get two characters to meet (cutely) and fall in love. When it comes to movies about college, there’s one meet cute that’s used over and over again: The two are walking towards each other, hands full of books and notes, so absorbed in the demands of university that neither notices the other as they get closer and closer. With a crash, they collide, scattering papers to the wind like so many autumn leaves. As they gather their things, they look up, meeting each other’s gaze and knowing at first sight, deep in their hearts, that they could have avoided this whole mess if they had their papers in a school bag instead of holding them loosely like a couple of morons.

Point being, it is very silly to not have a bag for your schoolwork, especially in today’s day and age, when knocking another student’s things to the ground will more likely result in you breaking their laptop than you finding your soulmate. But! Luck is on your side! There exists a multitude of thumb-intensive apps to help you find the love of your life and even more bags to help you haul your stuff from class to class. Here are a few favorites.

The Minimalist

Sometimes slim and stylish is the sensible solution, and the City Brief from Incase fits the bill. Sized for either 13” or 15” MacBook Pros (don’t worry, they’ll handle most other 13ish and 15ish-inch laptops of similar dimensions), the City Brief is compact with a fleece-lined compartment to cuddle your computer. Two zippered pockets make room for accessories and a larger pocket, the same size as the laptop compartment, gives you space for important papers. Best of all, the interior areas are all lined with contrasting navy blue and yellow fabric to help you find your stuff. There’s a shoulder strap included, and the two built-in handles can hide away in special pockets when not in use.

They say that a man is only as good as his tools. Well, here at B&H, we believe that a student is only as good as their tech. With that motto in mind, we’ve put together a list of back-to-school gear aimed at addressing the needs of various majors and disciplines. No pens and paper here, this is all advanced gadgetry. Grab your syllabus and let’s go.

Law Degree

For students working toward a law degree, a reliable laptop is absolutely vital. Few disciplines require as much studying, research, and scholarly exposition as a J.D. On top of that, you need to be mobile, and you need resources as mobile as you are. To handle all those demands, we suggest the Lenovo Yoga Book. This multi-tasking marvel helps you do it all, from taking handwritten notes with the included Real Pen to web browsing case results to writing briefs and outlining trial advocacy prep. The Yoga Book features a bright, 10.1” 1920 x 1200 display and a 360° hinge that allows you to use it either as a notebook or tablet, making it perfect for students that have to split time between the courtroom, classroom, and commons.

Updating the classic umbrella, Photek’s GoodLighter line offers a series of improvements and features that will result in both enhanced usability and better light quality. Available in 46” and 60” varieties, the GoodLighter’s main advancement is in the use of a 10-panel construction as opposed to the standard eight. This provides shooters with a more controllable and circular light that will create more natural-looking catchlights in your subject’s eyes. The white fabric is also designed to be neutral and will not impose any color cast on your light.

For versatility, the GoodLighter has a removable black backing that can transform the umbrella from bounce to shoot-through operation when desired. Also, these umbrellas have removable shafts and you can choose between 7mm and 8mm options so that you can ensure compatibility and security with your lights.

Back to School: Bringing Assignments to Life with 3D Printers

3D printers are not just for hobbyists. They can also be used in schools, whether it’s for creative purposes in art classes or educational purposes in science classes. With the versatility of a 3D printer, teachers can offer students a different perspective into learning about their subjects.

Most people will think of arts and crafts when it comes to putting 3D printers in the classroom. Drawing 3D objects adds another layer for students to express their creativity. When it comes to 3D printing, you usually design in an app on the computer and then print it from a traditional 3D printer. That doesn’t sound very engaging, does it? Instead, you can invest in a 3D printing pen, like the 3Doodler Start, 3Doodler Create, or the CreoPop.

Now Available: The Feiyu WG2, a Gimbal That Can Keep up with You

Motorized gimbal stabilizers for action cameras are great tools for the adventurer. Now in stock at B&H, Feiyu’s WG2 gimbal is a great option for sporting enthusiasts, as it’s designed to be worn or mounted by the user for nearly limitless framing possibilities. Additionally, the WG2 is waterproof; its IP67 rating seals it against water to depths of 3’ for up to 10 minutes. While this rating may not be sufficient for underwater cave exploration, it’s good to know that the gimbal will likely stand up to any splashes or quick dunks from aquatic encounters above the surface. The brushless motors of the gimbal can compensate for a full 360° on the pan and tilt axes. The roll, or horizon, axis compensation range is limited to +/-70°, but that should be more than sufficient for most applications. The WG2’s camera clamp is compatible with many common action cameras, including those from GoPro, YI Technology, and SJCAM. To further increase portability, the WG2 can fold down into its included splash-proof protective case.

Feiyu also offers the same gimbal stabilization technology in a handheld format. The Feiyu G5 is optimized for handheld usage, and although not waterproof like the WG2, retains a similar splash-proof design for use in unpredictable situations involving moisture and debris. Those looking for a more basic option that can accept either smartphones or action cameras can turn their attention to the Feiyu Vimbal c, whose lightweight, ergonomic design is perfect for those looking to enhance their videos.

Now Arriving: The LG Feature-Packed B7A-Series OLED TVs

A trifecta of HDR compatibility—HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)—joins the benefits of OLED technology and smart TV features in LG’s new B7A-series. Available in 55″ and 65″ sizes, the B7A looks to fulfill many TV wish lists with the LG Content Store for app downloads, built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity, mobile device mirroring, a full web browser, and UHD up-scaling. If you’re not familiar with OLED technology, each pixel is self-illuminating, so to create the color black, they simply turn off; this provides for extreme contrast ratios, which are the basis for vibrant color, which HDR technology then takes full advantage of with a wider color gamut than non-HDR displays. A speaker system with 40W of total power rounds out the top tier of features for this series.

The B7A-series is well connected also. It sports four HDMI inputs and three USB ports to connect a variety of digital devices, plus a composite video/stereo RCA audio input for your legacy devices. At only 1.9″ deep without the stand, these TVs won’t take up much room when wall-mounted. LG’s included Magic Remote Control makes navigating menus and exploring content easy and intuitive.

Come to the B&H SuperStore to get a look at the selection of TVs we have on display. If you can’t make it in, our friendly, knowledgeable sales staff can help you choose the right display, over the phone, at 800-606-6969, or via chat or email.

Introducing the Insta360 Pro: A Spherical VR Workhorse

Author: admin  |  Category: Best Photo Sharing, Digital Cameras

Stepping up into the professional content game, Insta360 introduced the Pro Spherical VR Camera, a fully-featured 360° spherical content creating platform. Its 6-camera configuration can capture enough information to render out 8K video while keeping the size of the unit itself to a minimum. While there are larger units that may have more cameras and more sophisticated stitching options, the Insta360 Pro serves as an excellent middle ground. The prospect of high-quality spherical video in a unified form-factor at a fraction (sometimes less than 1/10) of the cost of larger solutions is very desirable.

Let’s have a closer look at some of the features that the Insta360 offers. Spherical video and photo capture can be done at up to 8K, with 3D options for video topping out at 6K, so there’s plenty of resolution to go around. The six cameras sit around the equator of the aluminum/polycarbonate spheroid chassis, which is roughly the size of a large grapefruit. Each camera can record at 2K resolution, and has a lens with a 200° fisheye angle-of-view, providing enough coverage to generate a fully spherical video with minimal artifacts once stitched.

Nikon Celebrates Centennial with First Details of the “Herculean” D850

Happy Birthday Nikon! Today marks the 100th anniversary of one of the most important and celebrated companies in the photography industry. Even if you are a Canon or Sony shooter, of which I have been both, Nikon deserves a great deal of respect for its pioneering development of top-tier imaging equipment over the past century. Established in 1917, Nikon began creating advanced optical engineering techniques and then, over time, jumped into cameras and quickly became one of the top manufacturers in the field. And even though today marks Nikon’s own birthday, the company decided to give us a present too, with the announcement of the first details on the next FX-format DSLR to join their ranks: the D850.

Perhaps going a bit far with its marketing and using phrases like “Hercules rising,” Nikon is making some bold statements about the upcoming D850. The next-generation camera promises high resolution and high speed and, though the press releases are light on actual specs, one eyebrow-raising feature did get highlighted in the announcement video: 8K Time-Lapse. This means we will likely see a boost to the resolution with a newly designed sensor, likely pushing 40+ megapixels and vastly improved video performance overall. The sample footage looks spectacular, and if it is any improvement over the already impressive D810, then we can assume that the D850 will be truly remarkable when it comes to image quality.

Higher resolution isn’t the only goal of the D850, however, with the press release promising versatility for multimedia content creators. It even targets landscape, wedding, sports, fashion, and commercial photographers, meaning it should have many features that will make it almost universally appealing to the photographic world. They also make clear that development was guided by the users themselves and that it is packed with new technologies that will make taking pictures a much more enjoyable and rewarding experience. It really does look like Nikon is going to deliver an incredible camera in the D850, and I know I can’t wait to see more details.
